The urgent need to incorporate the concept of sustainability into public sector organisations has attracted increasing academic interest in Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) and Green Work Engagement (GWE). However, empirical evidence investigating these constructs within local government bureaucracy, especially at the sub-district level, is still very rare. This study examines the direct and simultaneous impact of Green Human Resource Management (GHRM) and Green Work Engagement (GWE) on employee performance at the Sukamaju Selatan Subdistrict Office in North Luwu Regency, Indonesia, utilising the Ability-Motivation-Opportunity (AMO) framework and Social Exchange Theory (SET). Data were collected using a validated Likert scale instrument and analysed with multiple linear regression on IBM SPSS 24, employing an explanatory quantitative design and census technique (N = 30). The research findings indicate that GHRM has a positive influence, although not statistically significant, on employee performance (β = 0.300; p = 0.102), while GWE shows a significant positive impact (β = 0.405; p = 0.024). Together, these two factors contribute 59.6% of the variance in employee performance (R² = 0.596; F = 19.935; p < 0.001). The findings indicate that procedural green policies alone are not sufficient to enhance performance; rather, employees' psychological commitment to environmental values, manifested through green spirit, dedication, and absorption, serves as the main driver of performance in the public bureaucracy. The theoretical and practical implications for improving the implementation of GHRM in local government administration in Indonesia are also examined.
