Medicinal plants remain an important part of daily health practices in rural communities; however, knowledge of their use often comes from family experience and is passed down across generations. Strengthening this traditional knowledge requires health literacy, particularly in proper plant selection, hygiene, dosage, storage, and safe use. This community engagement program aimed to improve residents' knowledge of the appropriate and safe use of local medicinal plants in Blang Tingkuem Village, Seulimeum District, Aceh Besar Regency. The program used participatory and educational approaches, including an initial assessment, educational sessions, discussions, simple demonstrations, and a pre-test–post-test evaluation. Twenty participants were assessed using a 10-item knowledge instrument with scores ranging from 0 to 10. Data were analyzed descriptively and using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. The mean knowledge score increased from 5.05 before the intervention to 9.10 after the intervention, representing a 4.05-point increase. Knowledge achievement increased from 51% to 91%, and all participants showed improved scores. The Wilcoxon test indicated a significant difference between pre- and post-education scores (p < 0.001). The educational activity improved community health literacy, particularly in herbal hygiene, appropriate dosage, storage of dried herbal materials, precautions for vulnerable groups, and safe use of medicinal plants. Local resource-based health education therefore has potential as a sustainable community empowerment strategy.
